Thursday Thoughts
December 11, 2008
Carlton Rider, Principal |
Our Christmas program was held this past
Tuesday, December 9th in our school gym.
Congratulations to all our students in
grades K – 5 as well as our Honor’s Choir
and 5th grade and junior high bands for
helping to get all of us in the Christmas
spirit with their acting, singing and
playing musical instruments. I thank Mrs.
Wettersten for the time, energy, and talent
that she gave in making this year’s
production a success. I am always amazed at
how she is able to coordinate nearly 300
students and still keep her sanity. A big
thank you also to our teachers in grades K –
5 for their patience and assistance during
the days of rehearsals leading up to the big
production.
Last week two former teachers at our school
passed away. Mr. Dennis Binner was a social
studies teacher here at St. Mary’s during
the late 1960’s and early ‘70s before going
to Fisher Catholic, teaching into the mid
1990s at the high school. Mr. Binner was
also a football and basketball coach here
during that time and was a very innovative
and motivating teacher. He was also involved
in what was called our Civics Club (Student
Council) during his time at St. Mary’s and
involved our junior high students in many
service projects in our local community. Mr.
Binner was respected by both his students
and fellow teachers at St. Mary’s and Fisher
Catholic.
The second teacher to pass away last week
was Mrs. Barbara Temple. Mrs. Temple taught
at our school from the late 1960’s to the
mid-1990’s. When I first began teaching here
at St. Mary’s in 1969, Mrs. Temple and I
were the two 6th grade teachers and she was
a big help in getting me through that first
year. She was involved in many things during
her years at our school. She coached track
for over 30 years and was recognized by the
Diocesan Department of Recreation for her
many years of dedicated service to that
organization and coaching. She had high
expectations of her students and stressed
the importance of being of service to others
through her work with our former Civics
Club. If there was a job to do or a project
to complete, Mrs. Temple was always there to
lend a hand. Her Catholic faith was very
important to her and she was a member of the
St. Mary Adult Choir and cantor for over 30
years. She loved animals and sheltered many
dogs, cats, and other four and two legged
animals in her home.
Mr. Binner and Mrs. Temple – two teachers
whose influence was felt by hundreds and
hundreds of students over the past 30 years.
We remember them not in their years of
declining health, but rather the years when
they both contributed to making those who
knew them a little bit of who they are
today.
Need to do some last minute Christmas
shopping? Scrip is available on Mondays and
Fridays to meet your shopping needs. This is
an easy way to take care of those
hard-to-shop-for people on your list. Pick a
Scrip lets them choose their own gift. Also,
why not make a New Year’s resolution to
begin purchasing from Market Day and help
provide funds for our many E 2 activities.
Pick up an order sheet next time you are in
our building at the information racks next
to our main office.
There was a hold up in the processing of the
Terra Nova Achievement tests due to the fact
that one school’s answer sheets were
temporarily lost. We have been told that the
results may not be shipped until after the
Christmas break. If they should arrive
before December 19th we will sent them home
with your child.
On Thursday, December 18th the Fairfield
Union Assembly Singers will be sharing the
sounds of the season with our students,
faculty, and staff at a special concert
beginning at 8:15 a.m. in our school
auditorium. I thank the director, Mr. Dave
Horsky, for taking time out of his busy
schedule to perform at our school.
Our Kindergarten, first, and eighth grade
students will be visiting our parish rectory
at the invitation of Fr. Franks on
Wednesday, December 17th to view the
decorations and sing carols.
Our last day of school before the Christmas
break will be Friday, December 19th. There
will be no cafeteria service that day and
dismissal will be at the regular time of
2:40 p.m.
