Thursday Thoughts
October 9, 2008
Carlton Rider, Principal

During the past few days I have been meeting with students on an individual basis who have received low grades in certain subject areas on their interim reports. I have reminded these students that these are interim reports and that they should be seen as indicators of where they are now in their various subject areas. I also have reminded these students that they still have time to raise their grades and to do better. Too often I think that both students and parents see the interim report in the same way that they see the quarter report. The quarter report is an indication of what the student is doing over a longer period of time with various means of assessment being used to better give both the student and parent a picture of academic progress over time. The key words here are over time. It is sometimes difficult to get a clear picture if a teacher has had only a couple tests with no other indicators of student progress being used. Class participation, completion of homework on a regular basis, working within a group in addition to quizzes and tests, reports, etc. are all factors to consider in the overall evaluation of a student. So, one can easily see that interims don’t always give the complete picture but still give us an indication as to where a student is at that time in the grading period.

A reminder that Terra Nova Achievement Testing will take place the week of October 20 – 24. These tests are important and give us another indication of your child’s academic progress over time and also gives us information as to strengths and weaknesses in our academic programs at St. Mary’s.

Our Holiday Happening will be the weekend of November 8th – 9th. Please be generous with your gifts of time, talent, and treasure when asked to help. The Holiday Happening is our big fundraiser of the year and profit from this event helps support many of our class field trips and enrichment programs.

Another reminder that Protecting God’s Children will be offered on Saturday, November 8th between 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at St. John’s Church in Logan, Ohio. Apply on line.

Friday, October 17th will be an early dismissal. Students will be dismissed at 1:30 p.m. that day. Check with your local school district as to whether transportation will be provided that day.

Educational Apparel will be visiting St. Mary’s on Friday, October 17th between 2:30 – 6:00 p.m. in the Spirit Center.
