Thursday Thoughts
May 7, 2009
Carlton Rider, Principal |
Fr. Franks and I spent a few hours with our
fifth grade students and parents at Pilgrim
Hills last Thursday afternoon. This was a
good opportunity for us to see some of the
activities that our students were enjoying
and to eat dinner and share good
conversation with not only the students but
parents as well. Since the fifth grade
students at St. Bernadette join forces with
our students for this experience, it gives
the students an opportunity to get to know
each other since the students at St.
Bernadette will be coming to our school next
year as sixth graders.
Today, May 7th, is The National Day of
Prayer. There are national as well as local
events scheduled for the day. The intent of
the day is to ask people around our country
to take time to pray for the needs of our
country. Locally, this is the 58th year that
this day is being observed. I had intended
to allow all of our students to go to the
Gazabo in downtown Lancaster to take part in
some of the activities, but scheduling
conflicts made this difficult. For this
year, individual classes are encouraged to
sign up to make a visit to our church during
the day. Our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders will
be attending the 9:00 Mass as a part of the
observance.
At our Home and School meeting this past
Tuesday there was concern that not all
parents were going to our website for news
and information that is also found in the
Thursday folder each week. We are receiving
more calls from parents asking questions
about activities that were posted on our
website. Several weeks ago about 200
families indicated that they would refer to
the website for information and did not need
the Thursday folder sent home. I guess that
if you are not accustomed to referring to
the website you don’t go into it on a
regular basis. For whatever the reason, we
want to make sure you are informed so we
will be sending home the weekly Thursday
folder to those who received it previous to
our cutting back through the end of the
school year.
Speaking of our Home and School Association.
. . the Association is still in need of
finding a president and treasurer. I realize
that with various work commitments and
transporting children here and there that
time management becomes a problem and being
involved in Home and School is just another
thing that takes time. Well, in reality, it
doesn’t take that much time and it opens up
many opportunities to get to know others in
our school community. It has been difficult
to find people interested in being a part of
Home and School but many working together
makes the work load easier to handle. Give
it some thought and if you have any
questions give our current president, Kim
Clark, a call at 614-833-4258.
Don’t forget . . . Mulan will be
presented on Friday, May 8th and Saturday,
May 9th at 8:00 p.m. in our school gym. Mrs.
Wettersten, along with the cast and crew,
have been working very hard the last several
weeks preparing for this musical. People of
all ages should enjoy this Disney production
coming alive on our stage!
The deadline for ordering the summer version
of Simple Solutions has been extended
through Tuesday, May 12, 2009. Information
is being sent home today in this week’s
Thursday folder and is on our website under
my last week’s Thursday Thoughts. Forms can
also be found in the information racks next
to our office.
Next Friday, May 15th, will be Inflatable
Day here at St. Mary’s. Release of
Liability forms will be sent home today.
Please read and complete the form and return
it to your child’s homeroom teacher on or
before Wednesday, May 13th. If you are free
that day, Home and School would appreciate
your help for all or part of the day.
Contact Kim Clark (614-833-4258) if you can
lend a hand.
At the end of the current school year there
will be four openings on our Advisory Board.
Six parents have expressed interest in
filling those positions. Each candidate was
asked to answer the question: “Briefly
explain why you are seeking a
position on the St. Mary School Advisory
Board.” Each candidates reply, along
with their telephone number, is being sent
home on a paper with the heading
Meet The
Candidates by way of the Thursday folder
and posted on our webpage under the link
School Board. Ballots will be distributed
the week of May 18th. All ballots will need
to be returned to the school office on or
before Wednesday, May 27, 2009. Results will
be announced Monday, June 1, 2009. Our
school advisory board will meet for its
regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, May
12th. All meetings are open to the public.
Activities next week include our 5th grade
being involved in our local Campfire to
Courthouse program on Thursday, May,
14th and the 8th grade Graduation Dance
hosted by our 7th grade on Saturday, May
16th in the Spirit Center between 7:00 –
10:00 p.m.
