Thursday Thoughts
March 26, 2009
Carlton Rider, Principal |
Last week I told you that I wound share with
you the results from the section on the NCEA
ACRE test that dealt with the Personal
Beliefs, Attitudes, Practices and
Perceptions of our 5th and 8th grade
students who took this test in February.
There were nine areas that the students were
asked to rate as not a problem, a minor
problem or a big problem. Here is how the
students responded in the order of most
important to not a problem:
Grade 5:
Cheating, lack of honesty 74%
Cursing, blasphemy, swearing 70%
Teasing, bullying, name calling 68%
Respect for diversity 49%
Fighting 49%
Personal safety 37%
Racism 37%
Drugs 21%
Alcohol 21%
Grade 8:
Teasing, bullying, name calling 93%
Cursing, blasphemy, swearing 85%
Cheating/lack of honesty 83%
Fighting 58%
Respect for diversity 42%
Eating disorders 38%
Racism 35%
Personal safety 28%
Sexual harassment 25%
Alcohol 12%
Other drugs 10%
Marijuana 8%
Date rape 6%
When the current 8th grade class took this
same test as 5th graders, their responses to
the same questions were as follows:
Teasing, bullying, name calling 78%
Fighting 74%
Cheating, lack of honesty 65%
Cursing, blasphemy, swearing 50%
Racism 33%
Drugs 26%
Alcohol 22%
Respect for diversity 20%
Personal safety 9%
With the coming of warmer weather, a
reminder that there is no supervision at
Firehouse Park (the park that we use for
recess) after school. We do provide
supervision during school hours when the
majority of children who are using the park
are our students but it is a public park and
if children go to the park after school and
play on the equipment they do so at their
own risk. I guess those children who play on
the equipment are always at some kind of
risk whether or not there is supervision.
The difference being that with supervision,
if there is an accident, we can provide some
type of assistance, alert our school nurse,
or notify the medics at the fire station a
little quicker than if there was no
supervision. Does that make sense?
Another reminder – there will be three
openings on our school board beginning with
the 2009/2010 school year. If you are
interested, please pick up a form from our
office and return it by Friday, April 3rd.
All interested candidates are requested to
attend our next board meeting on Tuesday,
April 7th at 7:00 p.m. in the faculty room
in our main building.
