Thursday Thoughts

Carlton Rider, Principal |
Each year we give our 5th and 8th grade
classes the NCEA ACRE Test of Religious
Knowledge. It gives us an idea as to what
the students are remembering as regards
certain areas of faith development. Not all
of the material covered on the test is taken
by the time students reach the 5th grade.
One area in particular is church history,
which is studied in depth in the 8th grade.
Nonetheless, our students do well with the
material that is covered up to that point in
their religious development. Following are
the results for the 5th grade in the area of
the Eight Domains of Catholic Teaching. The
National average is the average of all
students who took the test around the
country.

How do we use this information? As a
faculty, we review the results each year and
compare to past years performances. We try
to develop a base line that will identify
strengths and areas of concern over time. It
is most advantageous to compare a class when
they took the test in the 5th grade and
again in the 8th grade. This shows that
particular classes’ progress over time, much
the same thing that we do when studying the
Terra Nova Achievement Test results. It is
better to use the same class and compare
over time than to take one class each year
at that same grade level. That will not give
us a true indication of progress over time
since each class has a different make-up of
abilities from year to year.
Did you know that
our band has transformed itself from a
concert band to a marching band? After weeks
of practice, our band members participated
in the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Columbus
this week. A tip of the Irish hat to Mrs.
Wettersten and Allison Bartholomew for
preparing our students for this big event
and to our parents who were able to go to
the parade to see our students perform. The
band members really looked nice in their
band uniforms and performed to perfection!
I have been told that we still have a number
of registration forms for the 2009/2010
school year that need to be returned. The
deadline was last Friday, March 13th. If you
have not returned your registration form, we
are asking that you do so by this Friday,
March 20th. If there is a problem concerning
registration, please call the office at 740-
654-1632 and we will try to help you.
