Thursday Thoughts
March 5, 2009
Carlton Rider, Principal |
Earlier this week I
received summary copies of the evaluation
instrument results that were gathered in the
Principal Administrative Professional
Development Process for the Diocesan Office
of Catholic Schools. The summary copies
included feedback from our Advisory Board,
Parents, Faculty, and Pastor. Every three
years, evaluation forms are sent to members
of our Advisory Board, Parents, Faculty, and
Pastor to evaluate the principal dealing
with such areas as leadership; curriculum
development and implementation;
attentiveness to the interests and needs of
the community being served; providing for
the safety and well-being of those attending
our school; promoting the success of all
students by acting with integrity, fairness,
and in an ethical manner as a witness to the
gospel message to name just a few areas
covered on the survey. Of the 70 surveys
sent to parents, 17 were returned or around
25%. From the report shared with me,
strengths were noted as well as areas in
need of improvement. After reviewing the
feedback from the various groups surveyed, I
will be meeting with Fr. Franks to develop a
plan of action that will address the areas
that need improvement.
Areas identified as needing improvement on
the Parent survey include:
Student Management
Being specific to the student who breaks the
rules and not punishing all students.
Consistency in school rules, dress code, and
behavior expectations for all.
Review validity and seriousness of the
demerit system.
School Program Issues
Art and Music programs need improvement;
need to provide more accelerated and gifted
programs in all academic areas.
Teacher turnover a concern.
Encourage more innovative teaching methods;
“business as usual” will not attract more
families.
A breakdown of the number of students
represented by the survey:
(Not to be confused with the total number of
surveys returned)
K – 3; 1st = 5; 2nd = 3; 3rd = 2; 4th = 3;
5th = 2; 6th = 4; 7th = 1; 8th = 4.
During my time as principal, I have not been
afraid to survey our stakeholders as regards
the effectiveness of the job that I, as well
as our faculty, are doing concerning the
academic and spiritual development of those
entrusted to our care. This survey is
usually taken in May. Although I have only
shared the areas of concern with you, there
were many positive comments expressed on the
survey and I thank you for your support and
feedback. That feedback can only help to
strengthen our school and its academic and
religious programs.
The terms of three of our Advisory Board
members expire at the end of this school
year. If you are interested in being a Board
member you may pick up a Candidate
Information form in our school office. You
are asked to return the form no later than
noon, Wednesday, April 1st. Candidates are
asked to attend the Advisory Board meeting
on Tuesday, April 7th in order to be
introduced to the current Board members. The
Advisory Board normally meets the second
Tuesday of the month but, due to the Easter
break, will be meeting on the first Tuesday
in April.
If possible, may I ask that you make an
effort to pick up your child(ren) before
3:00 p.m. We have a number of students,
mainly upper level, who tend to hang around
the building and end up wandering in areas
that they should be avoiding. If students
are still here after 3:00 they will be
brought into the building and asked to stay
on the bleachers until the parent or
designated person arrives. Those students
who ride a bus will continue to wait on the
bleachers until their bus arrives.
