Thursday Thoughts
February 26, 2009
Carlton Rider, Principal |
I was in one of our
primary building classrooms this past Monday
checking the teacher’s lesson plans and just
observing what was going on in the classroom
when my attention was drawn to what one of
the students was telling the teacher. I’m
not sure how the issue came up but the
conversation was about going to Mass this
past Sunday. The person told the teacher
that he didn’t go to church this past Sunday
due to his participating in a sporting event
that was out-of-town. From what I was able
to piece together, whenever he is involved
in an out-of-town sporting event his family
doesn’t go to church. He told the teacher
that he really felt bad about missing Mass
but couldn’t do much about the situation.
With the decrease in regular Mass attendance
in most parishes the last few years, I would
imagine that some of this is due to students
being involved on traveling sport teams that
compete on the weekends outside our area.
Now mind you, this has nothing to do with
traveling sporting teams or even competing
on the weekends. I guess what is of a
concern to me is the fact that sometimes
parents make no effort to at least find out
when Mass is being celebrated and to make
accommodations to attend when they are
involved in weekend sporting activities. We
have an obligation to attend Mass on the
weekend and on holy days of obligation. As
far as I know, that has not changed. If it
is simply impossible to attend Mass because
of the sporting event, at least spending
time in a group prayer or time in individual
prayer could show the child that it is
important to attend Mass on the weekend but
that it is difficult to do so this
particular weekend. I truly believe that, as
adults, we send a strong message to our
children when we make every effort possible
to fulfill our weekly Mass obligation. If it
is important to us and we show that
importance, then it will be important to our
children, not only now but in their adult
lives. Some of our students, and maybe their
parents as well, believe that if they attend
their class Mass or an all-school Mass
during the week that this somehow fulfills
their Sunday obligation. Not true! Sunday is
the day of the Lord’s resurrection and that
is the reason we attend Mass. Every Sunday
is a little Easter and, as such, the
worshipping community comes together to
celebrate the mystery of Christ’s passion,
death, and resurrection and the remembrance
of this mystery in the sharing of the
Eucharist. This, in itself, should give us
reason to attend Mass regularly on the
weekend and to give thanks to God for the
many blessings He has given to us during the
week.
Many took advantage of the summer Simple
Solutions program last year in math. That
program will be available again this summer
for those who want to purchase the books. It
is a good opportunity for those interested
to continue a review of math and this year,
language arts during the summer months.
Information should be available in the next
week or so.
The monthly publications Home and School
Connection and Nutrition Nuggets will
not be available through the Thursday folder
beginning in March. These can be found under
the Home and School link on our webpage. If
there is information not currently found on
our webpage that you would like to see
included, please give us a call at 654- 1632
and let us know or send a note to the office
with your child.
Until next time . . .
