St. Mary School Cafeteria – News & Recaps
Feburary 2010
March 2010
Feb. 9, 2010 Update
Thanks to all parents who joined us for lunch this past week during our Catholic Schools Week celebration; we enjoyed the opportunity to serve lunch and see each of you who were able to attend. Most obvious were the students’ smiles as moms and dads accompanied them through the lunch line.
Thank you also to the student’s whose creative touches lended a very festive feel to the lunchroom. What beautiful decorations were made! The many posters honoring Mrs. Mickey’s 25+ years of service were fabulous; each were saved and a beautiful flower poster adorns her front door for all to see!
Finally, thank you to all teachers & staff for doing such a wonderful job coordinating lunch schedules to allow for such smooth transitioning and to ALL the St. Mary students for their impeccable behavior!!
On the brink of Michelle Obama’s announcement of her pledge to combat childhood obesity, attached are a few brief updates from the St. Mary School cafeteria:
- Following a bit of research, we have opted to change both our hamburger buns and dinner rolls to a whole-wheat and a multi-grain variety, respectively. Both were unveiled this past week. Menu changes / highlights will be listed at the bottom of the monthly school lunch menu as they occur.
- Underway is a study of new product availability and an overall cost analysis for the school cafeteria. Information will be forwarded later this Spring as we wrap up our study.
- I will be attending the Ohio Ecological Food & Farmers Association annual conference Sunday, Feb. 14. Chef Ann Cooper (Renegade Lunch Lady), keynote speaker, will discuss “Lunch Lessons: Changing the Way We Feed Our Children” and “From A to Z: Setting Up a Healthy School Lunch Program”. In addition I will be attending a workshop sponsored by the National Farm to School Network and the Ohio Food Policy Council “Farm to School Program Opportunities in Ohio”. I am looking forward to a very enlightening day!
- I will also be attending a workshop held by the Ohio Department of Education on the regulations and reporting procedures governing the USDA school lunch program on Monday, March 1.
- Please remind your student(s) during the last few months of winter & late arrivals to please report to the school cafeteria upon arrival at school regarding their daily lunch choices.
Feel free to contact the school cafeteria staff with any questions / comments or to inquire about volunteering opportunities.
Enjoy time spent with your family during this beautiful Winter weather blast,
Jenny Smurdon
